A red roller door stuck a foot above the ground in a tiled wall, with timber stacked inside

A sectional door hangs on two steel cables, one each side, that run from the bottom corners up to drums on the spring shaft. As the door rises the cables wind onto the drums. If one cable slips off its drum, frays or snaps, that side of the door is no longer held and the door twists in its tracks.

Why cables fail

Most cable faults start with something else. The door came down onto a bin or a car bonnet and the cable went slack and jumped its drum. A spring broke and let the tension go all at once. Or the cable simply rusted at the bottom bracket, where rain sits, until the strands parted.

What we do

We support the door, take the tension off the springs and replace both cables, not just the failed one, so the two sides stretch and wear at the same rate. The drums are reset square on the shaft and the cable wraps are seated in their grooves, then the door is lifted and lowered by hand to check it stays level all the way.

If the door has been running crooked for a while, the rollers on the low side are often damaged too. We will show you and price them before fitting new ones.

Is it safe to use?

No. With one cable gone, the other is carrying the whole door, and a racked door can come out of its track. Keep it shut, keep the car out of the way and call us.
