A cream sectional door seen from inside the garage, with its side tracks, hinges and the spring shaft running above it

The spring is what actually lifts a garage door. A sectional door weighs 60 to 90 kg, and the steel coil above the opening is wound to carry almost all of it, so that the opener (or your arm) only moves the last few kilos. When the spring breaks, that weight drops straight onto the cables and the opener, neither of which is built to lift it.

That is why a broken spring is the one fault that leaves a door completely dead, and why it is the job we send a van for first.

What we do on the visit

We clamp the door down, unwind what is left of the old springs safely and take them off the shaft. Springs are matched to the door by wire gauge, inside diameter and length, so we measure before we fit, and we carry the common sizes for UK sectional doors on every van. The new pair is wound to the weight of your door, not to a number on a chart.

With the tension off we also look at the parts that wear alongside a spring: the lift cables, the drums they wind onto and the bearings at each end of the shaft. If one of those needs replacing too, you hear the price before we do it.

Why the pair, not just the broken one

Two springs on one door have done exactly the same number of cycles. When one goes, the other is usually weeks behind it. Replacing the pair once is £245; replacing them one at a time means two visits and two lots of labour.

Before we arrive

Leave the door shut, unplug the opener if you can reach the plug, and keep the car where it is if it is inside. Do not try to lift the door by hand or let anyone run the opener. If the door is stuck open, tell us when you book: we can usually secure it for the night on the same visit.
