An opener pushes and pulls a balanced door; it does not lift it. The springs do the lifting. So before we touch a motor, we release the opener and lift the door by hand. If it is heavy, the springs are the real fault and a new opener would wear out in months.
The common faults
Clicking, door still. Usually a worn nylon drive gear or a failed start capacitor. Both are repaired on the visit.
Starts to close, then reverses. The safety sensors at the bottom of the door are out of line, dirty or have a broken wire. We realign and test them.
Remote range has dropped. Often just a battery, sometimes an aerial that has been knocked or a receiver that needs re-pairing.
Slow and straining. Almost always the balance. We put that right first.
When a new opener makes sense
If the opener is over 15 years old, parts can be hard to find, and a new one with soft start, an outside release and a battery backup option costs £395 fitted on a single sectional door. We take the old unit away and recycle it.
